Musical performances at technical events usually feel inappropriate and terrifying – remember Lana Del Rey at WWDC? But with an I / O that focused so heavily on playful machine learning, it made sense and provided the much-needed entertainment – in the form of a belt blob. ![]() It was an adapted, “massively optimized version” of the blob opera, in which 16 blobs were displayed as musical accompaniments using loaded web browser functions. Google engineers worked with Tune-Yards to put the performance together. In a Google blog post about the collaboration, the singers who voiced the blobs said “It was amazing to see a real artist working with the blobs as colleagues”. Next, the blobs took part in some classic tune yards songs and provided the dramatic, operatic vocal accompaniment. Tune-Yards (stylized as tUnE-yArDs) is the American, Oakland, Californiabased music project of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner. The first hint of the blobs came when Tune Yards singer Merrill Garbus started a phone call and answer of nonsense noises with a shadow figure on the screen. ![]() Tune yards played on a circular stage surrounded by tall screens. Google brought the blobs to the stage along with Tune-Yards to open the conference. Users can move the blobs up, down, and around to create sounds, harmonize with each other, and finally record a song. Their voices were assigned to four animated characters – called blobs – one each for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor and bass, with the ability to harmonize and sing together due to the machine learning algorithm that powers the project. Garbus's music draws from an eclectic variety of sources and utilizes elements such as loop pedals, ukulele, vocals, and lo-fi percussion. Four opera singers spent hours in the studio recording opera music. Google kicked off its I / O developers conference Tuesday with a performance that felt really innovative and actually entertaining by avant-garde vocal and electronica artist Tune-Yards – and Google’s own blob opera.
